New signing underscores ITFC’s ambitions to play Premier League football

Jason Scotland was unveiled this week as Ipswich Town’s newest player following his arrival from Wigan.

The 31-year-old striker, who scored 45 goals in 90 league games over two years for Swansea City, has signed a two-year deal at Portman Road.

The Trinidad and Tobago international will go straight into the squad for the Carling League Cup trip to Crewe on Tuesday (24 August).

“I want to play football week in week out and I’ve come to Ipswich to do that and hopefully help the team get into the Premier League.”

Town manager Roy Keane told the club website that Scotland has already proved himself as an able goal scorer. “Jason is a good player and I’m delighted to have him at the club. He will bring us something different.  He is more of a poacher than the other strikers we have here, who do a lot of work down the channels.

“We are always going on to our front players about being in and around the six yard box and Jason will do that.

He has proved he can score goals at this level but we have to be patient with him and give him time to settle in.”

Keane had hoped to secure Scotland's signature a week ago but Simon Clegg explained why it had taken longer than expected.

The club's chief executive said: "The deal was actually agreed last week but because of the Wigan manager's requirements to have Jason available for Saturday's game against Chelsea the deal couldn't be completed until today. I think securing Jason underlines the ambitions of this club to be playing Premier League football."

Capped more than 40 times for Trinidad, his move to Portman Road will see Scotland link up with his international team-mate Carlos Edwards.
