Alcatel-Lucent: IT Agility for Dynamic Business

Sean Coleman from Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Australasia, a sponsor company at the marcus evans Australian CIO Summit 2011, on why IT agility plays a prominent role in an organisation.

Interview with: Sean Coleman, Vice President, Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Australasia

The Information Technology (IT) environment of an organisation has to be agile and flexible to mitigate risks and capitalise on growth opportunities, says Sean Coleman, Vice President Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Australasia. From a sponsor company at the upcoming marcus evans Australian CIO Summit 2011, in Queensland, Australia, 25 - 27 July, Coleman discusses how IT agility is essential in today’s fast moving business environment.

What is the best way of identifying and mitigating threats and risks?

Sean Coleman: The biggest threat to Chief Information Officers (CIOs) is security. As technology becomes more open and accessible, we are seeing security breaches that are creating all sorts of havoc. There are a number of ways to avoid that, but it comes down to being agile and dynamic enough to move with changing trends. Security is getting better, but security breaches are becoming more complex. Agility is a big asset to a CIO trying to mitigate some of those risks.

How can CIOs generate growth and revenue?

Sean Coleman: Not many CIOs are tasked with generating growth, as opposed to maintaining an accessible platform and perhaps reducing costs, but if they are, IT agility is critical. There are growth opportunities in the market, but technology is moving very fast. The environment has to be flexible enough to handle security concerns and challenges, and migration issues.

What are the upcoming technologies CIOs can capitalise on?

Sean Coleman: Having industry standards (i.e. SIP) for Telephony over Internet Protocol (ToIP) is giving CIOs the opportunity to move away from legacy systems and switch to cheaper and more agile equipment. This is allowing the business to be more dynamic.

There are also opportunities in social media, which organizations need to analyse and test to see how it can generate new business. However, it would be a mistake to focus solely on social media. Videos, Skype and activities with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are also booming. The younger generation is used to interacting through different technologies, and companies need to cater to this group of people with different communication needs.

What long-term strategies would you recommend to CIOs?

Sean Coleman: Nobody has an answer for all challenges, so CIOs need to set up the ability for the organisation to trial new technologies and processes for accessing technology; an internal innovation centre to test and innovate, instead of relying on external vendors or consultants to provide the direction of the company.

Having a multi-vendor environment is also important. Homogenous environments are not typically quick-moving and dynamic. This could be challenging to manage and integrate, but is the only way to move forward.
